Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on Tuesday during a telephone conversation with his Iranian counterpart Mohammad Javad Zarif pointed out the danger of involving militants from Syria and Libya in the conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh, the Russian Foreign Ministry reports.
"Serious concern of Moscow and Tehran over the unprecedented escalation in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict zone has been expressed," the message reads. "The danger of involvement of radical militants of illegal armed groups from Syria and Libya in it was underlined".
In this regard, the ministers stated that there is no alternative to a diplomatic settlement "the beginning of which should be a ceasefire without preconditions".
"Lavrov pointed to the intensive efforts of Russia both in its national capacity and within the framework of the "troika" of the OSCE Minsk Group Co-Chairs to establish peace in the region as soon as possible. The ministers once again emphasized the important role that neighboring countries of Azerbaijan and Armenia can play in this," the Russian Foreign Ministry said.
The sides agreed to maintain further contacts.
Director of the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service Sergey Naryshkin said on Tuesday that, according to information available in the SAR, mercenaries from international terrorist organizations fighting in the Middle East are actively being moved into the conflict zone, and expressed concern about the possibility of transformation of Transcaucasia into a springboard for members of terrorist groups.
