Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated at the plenary session of the Russia-Gulf Cooperation Council Strategic Dialogue that Israeli strikes on Qatar’s capital are causing further destabilization in the Middle East region.
“Our meeting on September 11 is taking place amid a sharp increase in military-political tension in the Middle East following Israeli rocket and bomb attacks on September 9 on Doha, Qatar’s capital,” Lavrov said. “We received the news of this action with deep concern. We consider it a gross violation of international law, primarily the UN Charter, an infringement on the sovereignty and territorial integrity of an independent state, and a step leading to further destabilization in the Middle East.”
Lavrov emphasized that such actions deserve the strongest condemnation.
On September 9, a series of explosions occurred in Doha. Shortly after, the Israeli military press service announced that, supported by the General Security Service and with air force involvement, strikes had been made against Hamas representatives. Majid bin Mohammed Al-Ansari, adviser to the Qatari prime minister and official spokesperson for the Qatari Foreign Ministry, confirmed Israel’s responsibility for the attack.
According to Qatar’s Ministry of Interior, one security officer was killed and several others were injured. The ministry stressed that the situation in Doha remains safe.
Meanwhile, Hamas denied media reports of the deaths of members of its negotiating delegation but acknowledged that six people died in the attack, including the son of one of its leaders in the Gaza Strip, Khalil al-Hayya, and a Qatari security officer. According to Al Jazeera, members of Hamas’s political bureau were attacked during a meeting discussing the US proposal for resolving the Gaza conflict.
