Moscow and Tehran have agreed to take measures to speed up the process of delivering Russian vaccines against coronavirus Sputnik V to the Islamic Republic, and have also considered the possibility of organizing the production of this vaccine in the country as soon as possible, Russian foreign minister Sergey Lavrov said on Wednesday at a press conference following talks with Iranian foreign minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian.
"A contract has been signed for supplies of Sputnik V to Iran. We agreed to take measures to speed up its implementation. And we also considered the possibility of organizing the production of the Sputnik V vaccine in the Islamic Republic of Iran as soon as possible," he said.
According to Lavrov, the sides are interested in jointly counteracting the spread of coronavirus. "Our respective agencies are actively working on this," Lavrov noted.
In Iran, free voluntary vaccination of the population against coronavirus using the Russian drug Sputnik V began on February 9. The vaccine was approved in the republic in January 2021.
