Lavrov: Russia Ready to Help African Partners Strengthen Defense Capabilities

29 August

Russia is prepared to assist African countries in bolstering their defense capabilities and enhancing their anti-terrorism readiness, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov announced during a joint press conference following talks with Senegalese Foreign Minister Yassine Fall.

"Russia is ready to assist both Senegal and other African countries in strengthening their defense capabilities and improving the anti-terrorist preparedness of their armed forces and special services," Lavrov stated.

Lavrov expressed deep concern about the escalating terrorist threat in the region, particularly from groups affiliated with the Islamic State and al-Qaeda (both banned in Russia). "Islamist groups are gradually but steadily expanding their influence and activities into West Africa, including the neighboring countries of Senegal," the Russian foreign minister emphasized. "We share a common interest in uniting our efforts to combat these threats."
