Lavrov says Moscow counts on success of talks on Iran nuclear deal

01 March 2022

Russia expects negotiations on the Iranian nuclear deal to succeed, there is no alternative to it, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on Tuesday, speaking by video link at the Conference on Disarmament in Geneva.

"Efforts are continuing to restore full implementation of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) to resolve the situation around the Iranian nuclear program. We expect that they will be successful. There is no reasonable alternative to the JCPOA," he said. - "The obligations under the nuclear deal, which are supported by UN Security Council resolution 2231, must be strictly observed by all without any reservations".

The eighth round of talks is underway in Vienna to restore the JCPOA to its original form and bring the US back into the multilateral agreement. The work is taking place through consultations of the Joint Commission of Iran and the Five (Russia, Britain, Germany, China and France), separate consultations with the US without the Islamic Republic's participation, as well as in three working groups. The negotiators are working on a draft final agreement. It is expected that the eighth round could be the last; the negotiators were set to finish the work in February 2022.
