Lavrov says Western countries commanded the OPCW technical secretariat to "attack" Syria

Western countries have turned the Technical secretariat of the Organization for the prohibition of chemical weapons (OPCW) against Syria, Russian foreign minister Sergey Lavrov said in an interview with the Rossiya-24 TV channel.

"The talk of the town: the Organization for the prohibition of chemical weapons, where the technical secretariat is entirely subsumed by citizens of Western countries and NATO. The Convention on the prohibition of chemical weapons requires that all activities are based on consensus. But the secretariat is obediently tolerating the most flagrant violations of the OPCW and implementing the decisions of Western countries, which by voting, which in no way corresponds to the concept of the convention, accept them and declare that they are part of the secretariat's duties," Lavrov said. - "That requires it to perform the functions of the UN Security Council and identify those responsible for the use of chemical weapons. Now the West has given the secretariat a command to ''attack'' Syria, where in recent years there have been many ''dark'' cases and outright provocations have been staged".

The minister pointed out that Russia has repeatedly and publicly stressed how the secretariat has been manipulated by destructive, extremist-supporting nongovernmental organizations, such as the White Helmets.

In addition, according to Lavrov, similar trends began to emerge in other international structures, in particular UNESCO. "For example, the leadership of the UNESCO Secretariat is putting forward an initiative to promote 'values-based multilateralism,'" he said.
