Lavrov to Discuss International Issues with Turkmen Foreign Minister

28 August

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Turkmenistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Rashid Meredov will hold talks in Moscow, focusing on trade, economic and political cooperation. According to the Russian Foreign Ministry ahead of the meeting, “current issues on the Russia-Turkmenistan political, trade, economic and cultural agenda will be discussed, along with an exchange of views on international and regional problems.”

Lavrov maintains regular contact with his Turkmen counterpart. Their most recent meeting took place on June 25 during Lavrov’s visit to Ashgabat, where both sides signed a cooperation program between the two countries’ foreign ministries for 2025–2026 and discussed a wide range of bilateral and multilateral issues.

On the international stage, Russia and Turkmenistan work constructively within the UN, the Caspian “five,” and the Central Asia + Russia dialogue. Special emphasis is placed on cooperation within the CIS, where both countries are serving as co-chairs in 2025.

Economic partnership is also a priority in Moscow-Ashgabat relations, with Turkmenistan being a significant trade and economic partner for Russia in the region. According to the Russian Foreign Ministry, trade turnover is rising, and many major Russian companies—including Russian Railways, Lukoil, Tatneft, Kamaz, and Vozrozhdenie—have expressed interest in collaborating with Turkmenistan.
