Lebanon and Syria Agree to Ceasefire on Border

18 March

Lebanese Defense Minister Michel Menassa and his Syrian counterpart Murhaf Abu Kasra have reached an agreement to enforce a ceasefire along the Lebanon-Syria border, according to a statement from Lebanon’s Ministry of Defense.

The agreement was finalized during a phone call initiated by the Lebanese side, aimed at enhancing coordination and cooperation to stabilize the situation in border areas.

“The agreement includes closer coordination between Lebanese military intelligence and Syrian intelligence services,” the statement said.

Both ministers stressed the importance of joint efforts to prevent further escalation and civilian casualties.

The ceasefire comes after heavy shelling in northeastern Lebanon led to civilian casualties. Lebanon’s Ministry of Health reported at least seven fatalities and 52 injuries within 24 hours in border villages.

Meanwhile, a Syrian Ministry of Defense official told Sky News Arabia that the number of Syrian military casualties over the past day doubled from six to twelve, though no figures were provided for the injured.

In response, Syrian security forces began withdrawing from the Hawsh al-Sayyid Ali border area following a security operation. Damascus had previously accused Hezbollah fighters of crossing into Syrian territory, prompting their expulsion from the area.
