Lebedev: Berdimuhamedov as head of the People's Council of Turkmenistan will strengthen the country's position in the world

25 January 2023

CIS Secretary-General Sergei Lebedev congratulated Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov on his recognition as the national leader of the Turkmen people and his appointment as chairman of the People's Council (Khalk Maslakhaty) of Turkmenistan. Lebedev's corresponding letter was published Wednesday in the Neytralny Turkmenistan daily.

"Your fruitful activity, the goal of which is to build a strong and prosperous Turkmenistan, deserves the deepest respect. The recognition of you as the national leader of the Turkmen people is proof of this. I am convinced that your work at the helm of the Khalk Maslakhaty will help improve people's lives, further expand inter-parliamentary cooperation and strengthen the position of a neutral Turkmen state in the region and the world," Lebedev wrote.

He also expressed hope for continued constructive cooperation with Turkmenistan within the CIS.

Earlier, Berdimuhamedov proposed abolishing the House of Representatives and reorganizing the legislative body into a unicameral parliament. He made the proposal during a joint session of both chambers on January 11. He also recalled that two years ago, as part of the modernization of the government system, the parliament was reorganized into a bicameral body of representative and legislative power. On January 21, President Serdar Berdimuhamedov signed laws amending the constitution to create a unicameral People's Council headed by Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov, as well as declaring the former president of the republic a national leader.
