Malaysia’s King Departs for First-Ever State Visit to Russia

04 August

Malaysia’s Supreme Ruler, Sultan Ibrahim, has departed on a state visit to Russia, where he will meet and hold talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin, according to Malaysia’s national news agency Bernama.

The official aircraft took off from a Royal Malaysian Air Force base this morning. Notably, this trip marks the first official visit by Malaysia’s head of state to Russia since diplomatic relations were established between Malaysia and the USSR in 1967.

The state visit will take place from August 5 to August 10, 2025.

Malaysia is a federal elective monarchy: its king is chosen every five years by the governments of nine constituent states. Sultan Ibrahim of Johor has served as Malaysia’s monarch since 2024.
