The Malian government announced on Wednesday the lifting of a three-month ban on political parties and associations. The decision, made during a Council of Ministers meeting, effectively reverses the suspension imposed on April 10, 2024.
"The government has decided to revoke the suspension measure that affected political parties and the political activities of associations," stated the official government communiqué, as reported by the Malian news portal aBamako.
The initial suspension, implemented in April, was justified by the government as a necessary measure to maintain public order and bolster the fight against terrorism. At the time, authorities accused the Malian political class of engaging in "fruitless debates" and engaging in "subversive" activities that detracted from addressing the country's security concerns.
The subsequent ban on media coverage of political activities was implemented.
