Mali seeks participation in Russia-Africa summit

Mali expects to participate in the upcoming Russia-Africa summit this summer, Bamako highly evaluates the current level of relations with Moscow, Malian Ambassador to the US Sekou Berthe told TASS on Tuesday.


"We hope to be part of this summit. Right now I can't confirm to you whether our president will attend it. We will notify you at appropriate time. However, given the relationship we have with Russia right now, I think all signs are there, it's possible," the diplomat said.


"We have very good relations with Russia. Russia firmly supports our actions in the fight against terrorism, and we are very grateful for that," Berthe stressed. He attended the Russia-Africa reception in Washington, D.C., on Tuesday. The event was held at the residence of Russian Ambassador to the United States Anatoly Antonov.


As noted in late March by Federation Council Speaker Valentina Matviyenko, Interim President of Mali Assimi Goita received an invitation from Russian President Vladimir Putin to participate in the upcoming Russia-Africa summit.


The second summit, as well as an economic and humanitarian forum Russia - Africa are scheduled for July 26-29 in St. Petersburg. The first event was held October 22-24, 2019 in Sochi under the slogan "For Peace, Security and Development."
