Mali’s Foreign Minister: Russia Becomes First Country to Recognize Sahel States Alliance

03 April

Russia has become the first country to officially recognize the Alliance of Sahel States (AES) by hosting a ministerial meeting in Moscow. This was confirmed by Malian Foreign Minister Abdoulaye Diop following talks between the alliance’s representatives and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.

"Russia is not just a partner for us—it is a trusted and long-standing ally. Russia has supported us since our fight for independence. Our presence here in Moscow today demonstrates that Russia is the first country to recognize the Sahel Confederation," Diop stated.

He emphasized the shared views between Russia and the alliance on key security, peace, and geopolitical issues.

On September 6, 2023, Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger established the Alliance of Sahel States to create an African-led security, political, and economic framework. The goal was to develop regional solutions to local challenges.

On July 6, 2024, the three nations declared the formation of a confederation, deepening their cooperation and integration efforts. Later, on January 28, 2024, they announced their withdrawal from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), citing its alleged foreign influence and transformation into a "threat" to its member states.

The AES countries have since established joint forces to combat terrorist groups. Russia’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Vasily Nebenzya, welcomed this initiative, noting that the alliance is already successfully conducting joint raids against militant strongholds.

Russia has historically held influence and credibility in the Sahel region. Lavrov has repeatedly affirmed Moscow’s commitment to supporting Sahel-Saharan nations in resolving regional issues, adhering to the principle: "African solutions to African problems."
