Indonesia wants to become one of the BRICS format member countries, Federation Council Speaker Valentina Matviyenko said on Thursday.
"Indonesia is showing great interest in signing an agreement on a free trade zone with the Eurasian Economic Union, this issue is already very well advanced. Basically, Indonesia also wants to join the BRICS format," she said on the Russia-24 TV channel.
The speaker also noted that Russia and Indonesia are now jointly moving towards formalizing a strategic partnership between the countries.
Matviyenko is taking part in the eighth summit of the G20 speakers of parliament, which is organized in the run-up to the meeting of the G20 heads of state and government. Among the priority topics of the event are acceleration of sustainable development, green economy, food and energy security, economic challenges, an effective parliament, viable democracy, social inclusion, gender equality and women's empowerment.
