Leaders of Arab states plan to appeal to the UN Security Council, calling for the deployment of an international peacekeeping force in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank. This provision is included in the draft final statement of the Arab League summit, Sky News Arabia reported, citing diplomatic sources.
“The draft final statement of the Arab summit includes a call for the UN Security Council to deploy international peacekeeping forces in the West Bank and Gaza Strip to ensure the safety of both the Palestinian and Israeli peoples,” the channel quoted one of the sources as saying.
The summit participants also intend to support a Gaza reconstruction plan proposed by the Egyptian authorities. According to Al-Qahira Al-Ikhbariya TV, the reconstruction program envisions the creation of special humanitarian zones within the enclave, where Palestinians can be temporarily accommodated while their homes, destroyed in Israeli airstrikes, are rebuilt.
If Egypt secures the approval of all Arab states, the reconstruction plan will be presented to the international community. The cost of the project is estimated at $53 billion.
The emergency Arab League summit will take place on Tuesday in Cairo. It was convened at the request of Palestine, following recent statements by US President Donald Trump, who said that Washington is considering the possibility of long-term control over Gaza and resettling its residents to other countries in the region.
The summit was originally scheduled for February 27, but was postponed to March 4 to allow more time to finalize the agenda.
Interim President of Syria Ahmed al-Sharaa is also expected to attend the summit. On February 24, his office announced that the head of the new Syrian administration had received a personal invitation from Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi.
