The Russian Embassy in Libya has not been affected by the armed clashes that erupted in Tripoli on Monday evening. This was reported to TASS by a source at the diplomatic mission.
According to the source, the embassy “is located a considerable distance from the site of the clashes in southern Tripoli.”
Earlier, Libya Press reported that the clashes broke out between the 444th Combat Brigade and the Security and Stability Support Apparatus under the Libyan Presidential Council. The escalation was reportedly triggered by the killing of the head of the apparatus, Abdelghani al-Kikli.
A source in the country’s security forces confirmed to Libya’s Al Wasat television channel that al-Kikli — also known as Gheniwa — was killed Monday evening at the headquarters of the 444th Brigade. The reason for his presence there remains unclear, and it is not ruled out that he was “lured to a meeting.”
According to the latest reports, at least six people were injured during the clashes. Tripoli’s emergency services have declared a heightened alert. Military equipment is being deployed to the capital.
Mitiga International Airport has suspended operations, with flights redirected to the city of Misrata, located 200 kilometers east of Tripoli.
The Ministry of Interior of the Government of National Unity, based in Tripoli, has urged residents to “commit to staying at home and avoid going outside for their own safety.”
