Media: EU may include Iranian IRGC in the list of terrorist organizations

13 January 2023

The member countries of the European Union are considering the possibility of including the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC, the elite force of Iran) in the list of terrorist organizations. This was reported by Al Arabiya TV channel on Friday, citing its sources.

According to their information, Germany made such a proposal some time ago. In addition, according to the TV channel's sources, the EU countries are also discussing a new package of sanctions against Iran.

Against the backdrop of months-long protests in Iran, in 2022 the EU, the US and other countries have imposed sanctions against Iranian individuals and entities who, in their opinion, were responsible for the suppression of protests. Tehran believes that Washington and Brussels are using sanctions as a tool to increase social tensions in Iran.

On April 8, 2019, former US President Donald Trump decided to list the IRGC as a foreign terrorist organization. In response, Iran's Supreme National Security Council listed the US Armed Forces as a terrorist organization.
