Media: in Mali, the military has invited General Mahamane Toure for the post of interim President

The military that has seized power in Mali is considering the candidacy of Brigadier General Mahamane Toure as a compromise figure for the post of interim President of the country for a transitional period, Le Journal du Mali reports.


During talks held over the weekend in Bamako, delegations from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) led by former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan and the leaders of the putschist-created National Committee for the Salvation of the People (NCSP), the latter said that the transition period in Mali would last three years. "During this time, the state foundations of the country will be reformed," the publication quotes the head of the NCSP, Lieutenant Colonel Assimi Goita.


Brigadier General Mahamane Toure, 66, held a number of key positions in the Malian Armed forces, including chief of the General staff.


The ECOWAS delegation, which has a mandate to negotiate with the NCSP from the leaders of this major regional organization, is due to report to its leadership on the results of the trip in the coming days. After that, according to the information available here, another emergency ECOWAS summit will be held.
