The General Intelligence Directorate of Iran's Sistan and Balochistan province has arrested three individuals who are said to be operatives of the Israeli intelligence agency Mossad, the IRNA news agency reported on Tuesday.
Mehdi Shamsabadi, the prosecutor of Zahedan, the administrative center of Sistan and Balochistan, told reporters that there is a significant amount of serious evidence against the arrestees, so they have not tried to challenge their detention. He said investigative measures are continuing at this stage, and that by the end of July the prosecutor's office will prepare an indictment and send it to court.
The surveillance of the operatives had been conducted for several months by local intelligence officers. The prosecution is convinced that the arrestees were working to prepare attacks on Iranian nuclear scientists. Dissemination of classified data is also among the charges. Efforts are underway to identify individuals who may have been involved in the leak of classified information.
On May 22, ISNA reported that the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC, the elite units of Iran's Armed Forces), in cooperation with the country's ministry of intelligence, dismantled a group which was working for the interests of Israeli intelligence agencies. Iranian authorities regularly carry out operations to identify anti-government groups on the territory of the country. For example, on April 20, Iranian security forces announced the arrest of three people involved in illegal activities on behalf of the Israeli intelligence agency Mossad.
