On Thursday, King Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa of Malaysia appointed former Deputy Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, who heads the opposition coalition Alliance of Hope, as the new head of the country's government. This was reported by the Bernama news agency.
It is noted that the king has made a decision following discussions with representatives of the Malaysian authorities. The ceremony of oath taking will be held at 17:00 local time (12:00 Moscow time).
General elections were held last weekend in Malaysia, according to their results, none of the parties and coalitions could not get a majority of seats in the key lower house of parliament. In this regard, there was a need to form a coalition government between the competing parties. However, the parties could not agree on this issue, so the decision to appoint a new prime minister was made by the king.
There are 222 deputies in the lower house of parliament in Malaysia, to form a government, any one of the parties or coalitions had to get at least 112 seats. In the last election, Anwar Ibrahim's Alliance of Hope coalition won 82 mandates. The National Alliance, a conservative coalition headed by former Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin, got 73 seats. The National Front coalition, led by former prime minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob, secured 30 seats in the lower house.
On October 10, Yaakob announced the dissolution of parliament, expressing the hope that this would restore political stability and form a stable cabinet. Malaysia has had two successive prime ministers in the past two years, with Yaakob taking over after his predecessor resigned due to a loss of majority support in parliament.
