Media: Mauritania's Incumbent President Wins Election

The incumbent president of the Islamic Republic of Mauritania (IRM), 67-year-old Mohamed Ould Ghazwani, has won the elections held on June 29, according to Al Jazeera.

 

Preliminary data indicate that Ghazwani secured over 56% of the votes, ensuring his re-election for a second five-year term.

 

Independent candidate Biram Ould Dah Ould Abeid came in second with just over 22% of the vote. Voter turnout was approximately 55% based on preliminary calculations.

 

The final results of the election will be officially announced by the chairman of the Constitutional Council soon.
