Nigeria is showing interest in Russian armaments due to the threat of terrorist attacks, ethnic conflicts, separatist sentiments, and religious confrontations occurring within Nigerian territory, Izvestia reports, citing the Russian Embassy in Abuja.
"Nigeria is interested in Russian weaponry primarily because of large-scale challenges. These include the activities of Islamic extremist groups linked to international terrorist networks, as well as piracy in the Gulf of Guinea," the embassy noted.
The diplomatic mission specified that an intergovernmental agreement on military-technical cooperation has been in effect since 2023. Moscow and Abuja are currently coordinating the timing and location for a meeting of the relevant working group in 2026.
