Pakistan is expected to join BRICS as a full member during the group’s annual summit in 2026, according to the Business Recorder newspaper citing experts and diplomatic sources.
Economist Mehmoodullah Hasan Khan estimates that Pakistan’s full membership will open new avenues for Islamabad to expand economic partnerships with BRICS countries, increase foreign direct investment inflows, diversify trade relations, and support industrialization, digitalization, and the adoption of artificial intelligence technologies.
The newspaper notes that India has previously opposed Pakistan’s entry into BRICS. However, growing diplomatic and political backing from China, Russia, and other BRICS members improves the chances of Islamabad’s application being approved.
While emphasizing Pakistan’s interest in strengthening ties with BRICS countries, Khan also highlights Islamabad’s continued focus on expanding relations with the United States. He believes that the government and military leadership in Pakistan will likely “make US President Donald Trump realize that the country’s anticipated full membership in BRICS is inevitable.”
