Media Reports: Death Toll from Israeli Airstrikes on Rafah Rises to 20

12 December 2023

The death toll from Israeli army airstrikes on the city of Rafah in the southern Gaza Strip has risen to 20, according to the Al Mayadeen TV channel.

The majority of the casualties are reported to be women and children. Earlier, the Palestinian agency WAFA had indicated that at least 12 people, including six children, were killed in Israeli strikes on Rafah. The towns of Jabaliya and Khan Younis were also affected, resulting in additional victims.

Al Mayadeen further reported Israeli aircraft launching strikes on the Nuseirat refugee camp in the central Gaza Strip, with at least 15 people killed and taken to the hospital.

On November 22, the Palestinian movement Hamas reported reaching an agreement with Israel, facilitated by Egypt and Qatar, for a humanitarian truce in the Gaza Strip, which officially commenced on November 24. The agreement outlined provisions for the release of children and women held in the enclave in exchange for the release of Palestinian children and women from Israeli prisons. However, on the morning of December 1, the Israeli army accused Hamas of violating the truce and declared the resumption of hostilities in the Gaza Strip.
