Media Reports: Four Policemen Killed in Blast in Northwest Pakistan

12 December 2023

At least four members of the security forces were killed and several others were injured in an explosion at a police station in the northwestern province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, as reported by Reuters.

Additionally, in another terrorist attack in the Dera Ismail Khan district within the same province, 28 people sustained varying degrees of injuries.

The banned terrorist group Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), the Pakistani faction of the Taliban, claimed responsibility for both incidents.

The TTP enjoys widespread support from Afghanistan, with the Afghan government refusing to combat the group within its territory, citing the Pakistani Taliban's past alliance with the Taliban against US forces.

Talks between Pakistani authorities and the TTP to cease terrorist attacks stalled and collapsed in December 2022. Since the Taliban seized power in Afghanistan in August 2021, terrorist attacks in Pakistan have surged by 60%, reaching a total of 420, according to the Pakistani Interior Ministry. Additionally, the number of suicide attacks has risen by 500%, totaling 141 during this period.
