Media: Turkey sent a request to the UN to change its official name

02 June 2022

Turkey has asked the UN to change the name of the republic in all official documents in foreign languages so that it is spelled according to Turkish phonetic norms, the Sabah newspaper reported on Wednesday.

"We are completing the process started by our President Tayyip Erdogan of raising the value of our country as a brand. We have sent a letter to the secretariat of the UN secretary-general and thus register our country's foreign name with the UN as Türkiye," the republic's Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu wrote on Twitter.

Stephane Dujarric, spokesman for the UN secretary-general, told Anadolu Ajansı that the UN has granted Turkey's request. "UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres received a notification from Turkey's foreign minister about the renaming. The change of the country's name comes into force upon receipt of this letter," the agency quoted him as saying.

Thus, instead of the traditional name Turkey at all international forums and official documents will be used Türkiye, as it is pronounced in Turkish.

For several years, Turkey has been actively promoting its image and products in the world market to achieve maximum recognition of the country as a brand and make it unique. The current step is designed to formally finalize this PR campaign of Ankara. In addition, the country continues to actively promote the "Türk mal" ("Made in Turkey") brand around the world.

In January, Fahrettin Altun, head of the Turkish presidential administration's public relations department, said Turkey "had become a big and strong country that not only consumes but also produces". In this regard, the republic needs to promote its vision in international markets by presenting its own products and raising their visibility.
