Turkish army artillery shelled Ayn Issa, Tell Dibis and al-Hushan settlements in the northern Syrian province of Raqqa on Wednesday. According to Al Ekhbariya TV channel, Turkish troops and Ankara-backed Syrian opposition formations fired heavy guns and mortars. As a result, houses of local residents and commercial buildings were damaged. There were no reports of casualties.
Several sections of strategic highway M4 that connects western and eastern regions of Syria also came under fire.
Al Ekhbariya points out that "shelling of northern Raqqa by the Turkish occupation forces disrupts the economic life of the province and paralyzes the traffic on the roads." In addition, the artillery strikes have displaced hundreds of Syrian families from the dangerous areas deep into the province.
Turkish troops are firing into territory controlled by the Kurdish Democratic Syrian Forces (SDF). On Tuesday, a Turkish air force drone strike on the town of Qamishli killed one civilian and four Kurdish fighters, with women and children among the wounded.
Turkey conducted a military Operation Peace Spring in northern Syria in October 2019, creating a 30-kilometer security zone along its border. Syrian armed opposition formations stationed there are fighting against Kurdish forces.
