Media: Yemen Government Resigns

16 January

Yemen’s Presidential Leadership Council Chairman Rashad al-Alimi has appointed the country’s foreign minister, Shaya Mohsen al-Zindani, as the new prime minister, Yemen’s SABA news agency reported.

The decree instructs al-Zindani to form a new government, while the current cabinet will continue performing its duties until the new lineup is approved.

On January 15, al-Alimi accepted the government’s resignation after a request submitted by Salem Saleh bin Buraik, saying the move was intended to “open the way” for forming a new cabinet in line with recent changes in the country; al-Alimi also appointed bin Buraik as his adviser on financial and economic affairs.

The reshuffle followed an escalation of tensions in Yemen’s southern and eastern regions: in early December 2025, UAE-backed Southern Transitional Council forces took control of Hadhramaut and Al Mahrah, after which Yemen’s authorities annulled a joint defense agreement with the UAE and requested military support from the Saudi-led coalition.

In January, some STC leaders who traveled to Riyadh for talks announced the organization’s dissolution, but supporters of separatist leader Aidarus al-Zubaidi—who, according to the Arab coalition, fled to the UAE—rejected the dissolution; on January 11, Yemen’s authorities said government forces had re-established control over southern and eastern provinces, including the temporary capital Aden.
