Member of Islamic Ennahda party leadership arrested in Tunisia

14 February 2023

Tunisian police made arrests of political activists on Monday.

According to Mosaique FM, a member of the leadership of the country's influential Islamic Ennahda party, Noureddine Bhiri, was arrested following a search of his house. Lawyer and political activist Lazhar Akremi was also arrested.

The Ennahda party is in opposition to the current Tunisian president, Kais Saied.

In addition, a security team arrested the general director of the Mosaique FM radio station, Noureddine Boutar. His family has not been informed of the reasons for the arrest.

Tunisia has been in an acute political crisis since 2021, stemming from a confrontation between the president and parliament, in which the Ennahda party played a major role.

In March 2022, after an attempt by deputies to cancel the exceptional measures and decrees of the head of state, the latter dissolved the parliament.
