16 December 2024

At a meeting of the Council of Heads of Government of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin outlined the progress made under Russia's chairmanship of the organization.

“Allow me to summarize the preliminary results of Russia's CIS chairmanship,” Mishustin said. He noted that the efforts had been focused on implementing the first phase of the CIS Economic Development Strategy. Key priorities included food and energy security, industrial cooperation, business activity stimulation, and digital transformation.

The prime minister highlighted Russia's interest in strengthening long-standing economic and humanitarian ties with CIS member states. He pointed out that the CIS nations’ share in Russia's foreign trade had risen to 16%, with mutual trade turnover increasing by over 11% in the first three quarters of the year. “Special attention is being paid to cooperation in education and science. Recently, student teams from CIS countries presented their innovative ideas, proving that we have many talented young people eager to work together,” he added.

Mishustin also emphasized advancements in transportation infrastructure, including a plan to develop international transport corridors and establish a network of multimodal logistics centers, hubs, and terminals. “The Memorandum on the Digital Transformation of the CIS Transport Sector adopted today will make the industry truly innovative,” he remarked.

In the energy sector, he referred to an approved cooperation concept and urged the joint implementation of modern methods to manage large energy systems, enhancing the competitiveness of CIS economies.

On humanitarian initiatives, Mishustin mentioned the proposed creation of the International Organization for the Russian Language in Sochi, an idea put forward by Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev. He also noted the significance of 2024 being the Year of Volunteer Movements within the CIS. “Volunteer events have brought together thousands of committed citizens across the Commonwealth. It is essential to expand systematic cooperation in supporting volunteerism and engage foundations, volunteer organizations, and civil society groups in this collective effort,” Mishustin concluded.
