Mohammed al-Bashir has announced his appointment as the head of Syria's transitional government.
"The meeting focused on transferring responsibilities from the ousted regime’s government to the Syrian interim government. This body will oversee state governance during the transitional period, which could end by March 1. We have been entrusted with managing Syria's government affairs until March 1, 2025," al-Bashir stated following a joint session of the Council of Ministers, previously under Bashar al-Assad, and the so-called Salvation Government. The latter was established in November 2017 by the group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (banned in Russia). His announcement was broadcast by Al Arabiya.
Al-Bashir has led the Syrian Salvation Government since January 2024. This opposition entity operated as an alternative governing structure, providing administrative oversight in areas controlled by armed opposition forces in Syria’s Idlib province.
