Morocco condemns incursions by Israeli officials into Al-Aqsa Mosque

28 July 2023

Morocco's Foreign Ministry has strongly condemned the continued incursions by certain Israeli officials and extremist supporters into the Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem and its esplanade. The country emphasizes its total rejection of any unilateral actions aimed at undermining peace efforts and calls for the preservation of the approved legal and historical status of Jerusalem and the Al-Aqsa Mosque. Morocco also urges the prevention of any form of escalation or provocations in the region.

The recent visit of Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir to the Temple Mount in the Old City of Jerusalem, where the Al-Aqsa mosque complex is located, has further heightened tensions. This marks his third ascent to the Temple Mount this year, raising concerns among the Palestinian population and the international community.

The status of Jerusalem remains a crucial issue in the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. The city's eastern part was occupied by Israel during the 1967 war, and Israel claims Jerusalem as its "one and indivisible" capital. However, the United Nations Security Council has rejected Israel's claim to East Jerusalem and called on member states to withdraw their diplomatic missions from the city (Resolution 478 of August 20, 1980).

Morocco advocates for a two-state solution to the Palestinian question, calling for the establishment of an independent State of Palestine alongside the State of Israel based on the June 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital.

The Moroccan authorities closely monitor developments in the Middle East conflict zone, especially concerning Jerusalem, often referred to as the "City of the Three Religions." King Mohammed VI serves as Chairman of the Jerusalem Committee of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, focusing on preserving the city's spiritual and civilizational significance and promoting its role as a symbol of tolerance and peace.
