Moroccan authorities reject the encroachment upon the legal and historical status of Jerusalem as well as the Al-Aqsa Mosque. This was announced on Tuesday by Kingdom's Minister of Youth, Culture and Communication Mohamed Mehdi Bensaid. Addressing the international symposium "Media's Role in Promoting Civilizational Identity of Jerusalem," he said.

"The Palestinian issue is a priority of the Kingdom's foreign policy and lies at the heart of the political and diplomatic actions and humanitarian initiatives pursued by Morocco under the leadership of King Mohammed VI to protect the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people, preserve the religious essence of Jerusalem, its legal status and historical and civilizational identity," the minister stressed.

"Morocco, amidst the unfolding events in the Palestinian territories, insists on the centrality of a just Palestinian cause and on its firm, unwavering position on this issue. Morocco has always remained faithful to its principled position and has always defended the sanctity of the holy sites, rejecting any attack on the legal and historical status of Jerusalem and the Al-Aqsa Mosque, taking into account the symbolic importance of the city as a territory of peace, coexistence and meeting between the three monotheistic religions," Bensaid noted.

The Moroccan authorities traditionally pay increased attention to developments in the Middle East conflict zone, including the situation around the fate of the "City of Three Religions" - Jerusalem. King Mohammed VI chairs the Jerusalem Committee of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, whose main activity is to preserve the spiritual and civilizational significance of the city and protect its role as a center and spreader of the values of tolerance and peace.
