Moscow and Tashkent agree on Sputnik V localization in Uzbekistan

Russian and Uzbek authorities have agreed to localize production of the Sputnik V coronavirus vaccine in the republic, the Uzbek side has already selected a site for the production of the drug, Russian Health Minister Mikhail Murashko told RIA Novosti on Friday.


Murashko is on a visit to Uzbekistan on Friday, where he met with the republic's president, Shavkat Mirziyoyev.


"We agreed to localize the production of Sputnik V (in Uzbekistan - ed.) as part of the order of Russian President Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin and the president of Uzbekistan," Murashko said after the meeting.


The minister added that the Uzbek side selected a production site for the production of the Russian vaccine, the project is being worked out.


Uzbek authorities received the first batch of Sputnik V on April 23 and another on April 27.


Earlier, at a meeting with his Russian counterpart Mikhail Mishustin in Kazan, Uzbek Prime Minister Abdulla Aripov asked Moscow to increase supplies of Sputnik V and to consider the possibility of producing it in the republic.


On April 1, a vaccination campaign against the coronavirus began in Uzbekistan. Now people in Uzbekistan are also being vaccinated with AstraZeneca, a recombinant vaccine from China's Anhui Zhifei Longcom Biopharmaceutica. More than 1.2 million people in the country have already been vaccinated.
