UN Secretary-General António Guterres announced on Wednesday the appointment Najat Roсhdi of Morocco as the UN Secretary-General's Deputy Special Envoy for Syria, the Maghreb Arab Press (MAP) news agency reported.
Rochdi succeeds Khawla Matar of Bahrain, to whom Guterres expressed his "gratitude for her efforts and dedication in the search for peace in Syria."
As MAP notes, Rochdi has a solid background in the UN system, including in conflict and post-conflict zones. In particular, she worked in the Office of the UN Special Coordinator for Lebanon (UNSCOL) and served as Humanitarian Adviser to the UN Secretary-General's Special Envoy for Syria. She has also served as Humanitarian Coordinator in the UN Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in the Central African Republic (MINUSCA) and in several other UN entities.
The post of Special Envoy of the UN Secretary-General for Syria is currently held by Geir Pedersen of Norway.
