Nebenzya: Russia Concerned About Security Situation in Afghanistan

11 March

Russia is deeply concerned about the security situation in Afghanistan, particularly given the continued presence of the Afghan branch of the terrorist organization ISIS-Khorasan (banned in Russia). This was stated by Vasily Nebenzya, Russia's Permanent Representative to the United Nations.

“We share the Secretary-General’s assessment of the difficult internal political situation in Afghanistan. The security situation remains a major concern for us, especially due to the ongoing presence of ISIS-Khorasan (banned in Russia). Despite efforts by the de facto authorities, the problem of eradicating terrorism has yet to be resolved. The Afghan wing of ISIS (former IS — banned in Russia) continues to recruit new members, receives financial support from abroad, and carries out regular terrorist attacks. These attacks often target religious and ethnic minorities, including women and children,” Nebenzya said during a UN Security Council meeting on Afghanistan.

The Russian diplomat also emphasized that the terrorists are seeking to destabilize not only Afghanistan but the entire region. “Moreover, the threat of weapons left behind by Western military forces falling into the hands of militants remains very real, as does the risk of these weapons spreading throughout the region and beyond,” he added.
