Russia's Permanent Representative to the UN Vasily Nebenzya revealed that the UN Security Council is expected to issue a statement on the situation in Syria within the coming days.
"We discussed the necessity of preparing a statement during the Council meeting. While no agreement was reached today, I believe we will see progress in the next few days," Nebenzya told reporters following Monday's closed Security Council consultations on the Syrian crisis.
Since November 27, opposition forces have mounted a significant offensive against Syrian army positions in Aleppo and Idlib provinces. By December 7, they had captured key cities, including Aleppo, Hama, Daraa, and Homs. On December 8, the opposition entered Damascus, prompting government forces to retreat from the capital.
Prime Minister Mohammed Ghazi Al-Jallali has indicated a willingness to oversee a peaceful transfer of power. Meanwhile, former President Bashar al-Assad has stepped down and left the country.
