Nigerian Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala appointed Director-General of WTO

Nigeria's former Finance Minister Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala will take over as Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO) on March 1. The decision was made by consensus on Monday at its special meeting in Geneva by the WTO's General-Council, the organization's press office said.


"WTO members have agreed to appoint Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala as Director-General of the WTO. This decision was taken by consensus today at a special meeting of the General Council," the press service said. "Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala will be the first woman and the first African to head the WTO. She will take up her duties on March 1, and her renewable term expires on August 31, 2025," the statement said.
