Niger's Prime Minister Plans Visit to Russia

15 January

Niger's Prime Minister Ali Lamine Zeine, accompanied by key ministers, including defense, oil, sports, and trade, embarked on a trip that includes visits to Iran, Russia, Serbia, and Turkey, according to reports from Mondafrique, citing government sources.

The trip is aimed at diversifying partnerships for Niger in various sectors such as defense, agriculture, energy, trade in oil, and medical equipment. The move reflects Niger's efforts to broaden its international relations under the new government.

In July 2023, Niger experienced a period of political turmoil when military officers from the presidential guard mutinied, claiming the removal of President Mohamed Bazoum from power. This led to the formation of the National Council for the Safeguard of the Homeland. The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) responded with sanctions and demands for the release of Bazoum.
