The number of labor migrants from Uzbekistan who left for Russia through organized recruitment in January-February has seen a twelvefold increase since the beginning of the year, totaling more than 20,000, according to the press service of the Agency for External Labor Migration under the Ministry of Employment and Labor Relations of Uzbekistan.
"For the first eight months of this year, we have facilitated the organized recruitment and deployment of 20,450 Uzbek citizens to work in the Russian Federation," the agency reported. It noted that between January and April of this year, 1,706 citizens had left Uzbekistan for Russia through organized recruitment, indicating a twelvefold increase since the spring.
During the same period, an additional 812 nationals of Uzbekistan went to work in Kazakhstan, 3,184 to South Korea, 1,809 to the UK, and 1,952 to various other countries. In total, from January to August, 28,207 Uzbeks ventured abroad to work through organized recruitment, marking a 7.5% increase compared to the same period in 2022.
Specialized agencies estimate that the number of Uzbeks working abroad on a permanent basis surpasses 2 million people, with over 60% of them employed in the Russian Federation.
In the previous year, migrant workers sent approximately $20 billion in remittances to their home country, with more than 80% of these funds coming from Russia.
