Overchuk: Russia and Azerbaijan Committed to Developing Economic Ties

24 July

Russia and Azerbaijan are continuing to develop and maintain their economic relations, and neither side is interested in breaking them off, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexei Overchuk said in an interview with Rossiya-1.

“In general, our economic ties with Azerbaijan are strengthening and actively maintained, and no one wants to see them disrupted,” Overchuk stated.

He acknowledged that Moscow and Baku do have certain disagreements over some of each other’s recent actions. “Of course, we do have issues that concern us, and we remain in constant contact,” Overchuk added.

Tensions have risen in recent weeks following a major criminal investigation in Russia, which led to the arrest of eight suspects in Yekaterinburg. Two of those detained died in custody, and their bodies were later returned to Baku. Azerbaijani authorities protested, claiming postmortem examinations found evidence of violence, and consequently suspended joint events with Russia. Several Russian citizens—including journalists—were also detained in Azerbaijan, prompting both sides to issue diplomatic protests and summon ambassadors for consultations. The two countries’ foreign ministries remain engaged as they address these disputes.
