Overchuk: Russian Language a Key Asset for CIS Cooperation and Development

25 June

The Russian language has become a significant advantage in fostering cooperation among the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) and supporting their economic growth, said Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexey Overchuk during a government session in the State Duma.

“We share a common civilizational space, and what binds us is a shared language of interethnic communication—Russian. This is a clear advantage that allows us to move forward together. For Russia, this is a particularly important issue,” Overchuk noted.

He emphasized that the prosperity and economic success of CIS countries depend heavily on human interaction and the ability to maintain relationships. “And language plays a central role in that process—it’s not just a tool for communication; it shapes who we are,” he said.

Overchuk also highlighted how personal development is deeply tied to language: “It depends on what books we read, what textbooks we use, who teaches us, what kind of environment we grow up in, and how we’re influenced by culture, sports, healthcare, and media. Essentially, we’re talking about shaping a person.”

He concluded by noting that Russia is already applying this comprehensive approach in CIS countries—from early childhood education to the development of in-demand professionals.
