Pakistan accuses IS of involvement in terrorist attack with 45 casualties

31 July 2023

According to a security official cited by the Dawn newspaper, militants belonging to the terrorist organization "Islamic State" (IS, banned in Russia) were responsible for the suicide bombing that occurred on Sunday in the Bajaur district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province in northwest Pakistan.

"There is no doubt about the involvement of IS in this crime," a representative of Pakistani security services told the newspaper.

On July 30, a suicide bomber carried out an explosion at a congress of the ruling coalition's Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl party. The congress was held in a hall with approximately 400 people present. The devastating attack resulted in at least 45 people being killed and around 150 others injured. Among the victims was the party's general secretary, Ziaullah Jan, who lost his life in the incident.

As a response to the attack, a state of emergency was declared in Bajaur, and hospitals in the provincial capital, Peshawar, were placed on high alert to handle the large number of injured individuals, many of whom are in critical condition.

Pakistani Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif has ordered a thorough investigation to identify and apprehend the perpetrators responsible for the heinous act. The attack has garnered widespread condemnation from neighboring countries Afghanistan and Iran, as well as from the United States.
