Pakistan plans to buy wheat from Russia

17 October 2022

Pakistan intends to buy wheat from Russia, this issue is already being discussed by technical experts, Ambassador of Pakistan in Moscow Shafqat Ali Khan said in an interview with TASS.

"Technical experts are already discussing this. We want to buy wheat from Russia," he said when asked if any arrangements had been made to supply Russian wheat to Pakistan, which faces the threat of a food shortage.

The ambassador recalled that Pakistan also bought a lot of wheat from Russia in 2021, at which time a comprehensive agreement was signed between the ministries of agriculture. "As part of this agreement, technical experts are discussing details, I think negotiations are going well," he added.

"Pakistan usually provides itself with food, but sometimes there are shortages. Russia has become a new supplier for us, before it was other countries. We see Russia as a long-term, stable partner for food supplies," the diplomat stressed.

Ali Khan also thanked Russia for humanitarian aid and humanitarian flights to Pakistan. "In the past, when we faced large-scale natural disasters such as the earthquake in 2005 or the floods in 2010, Russia helped us too. We still remember it," he pointed out.
