Pakistan Prime Minister Asks Putin for Mediation in Conflict with India

04 June

Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has asked Russian President Vladimir Putin to help mediate the conflict with India. This was stated by Special Assistant to the Prime Minister of the Islamic Republic, Syed Tariq Fatemi, during a session of the Valdai International Discussion Club.

"Neighbors cannot live in a state where they are ready to go to war at any moment. We have sent senior officials to neighboring countries — to the United States, to the European Union, to Russia — to explain that any proposal coming from any country, or from the UN, or from nations that maintain a neutral stance between India and Pakistan — we are ready to sit down with them and let them help resolve the issue," he said.

"Yesterday I had a meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Mr. [Sergey] Lavrov. I handed him a letter from my Prime Minister addressed to His Excellency Mr. Putin. We have asked all these countries to use their influence to bring India and Pakistan to the negotiating table and reach a peaceful settlement," Fatemi added.

He also emphasized that Pakistan is open to any initiative from Russia that could reduce tensions with India. "We are here to see support from Russia for any initiative that can help lower the tensions. Pakistan and India must sit down at the negotiating table," Fatemi stated.
