The Pakistani government has decided to partially restrict internet access and mobile services in Islamabad and certain areas of the Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa provinces ahead of an opposition protest scheduled for November 24, 2024. The decision was reported by Geo TV.
The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) is set to begin limiting network access from November 22. The move aims to prevent opposition supporters from coordinating actions during the protests.
In addition to the internet restrictions, a two-month ban on mass gatherings has been imposed in the capital region, and approximately 20,000 law enforcement officers are being deployed in Islamabad. According to Geo TV, container barricades may also be used to block city entrances in anticipation of the protests.
The opposition party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), led by former Prime Minister Imran Khan, plans the protest to demand the repeal of constitutional amendments introduced in October 2024, a review of the February 2024 parliamentary election results, and the release of political prisoners, including the PTI founder.
