Pakistan Warns Israeli Strikes on Iranian Nuclear Sites Could Trigger Global Catastrophe

17 June

Israeli military strikes on Iran’s nuclear infrastructure risk triggering a global disaster, warned Pakistan’s Minister for Planning, Development and Special Initiatives, Ahsan Iqbal Chaudhry, during a briefing with international media.

“The international community cannot turn a blind eye to the pattern of Israeli aggression — in Gaza, Lebanon, Syria, and now Iran. Strikes near nuclear facilities, such as in Natanz, carry the risk of a catastrophe with far-reaching consequences. Yet there remains a troubling lack of accountability,” Iqbal said.

He noted that rising oil prices, shrinking food supplies, and redirected aid are fueling global instability. “Uncertainty is spreading, and it is developing countries like Pakistan that bear the brunt of conflicts we didn’t start and simply cannot afford. Escalation is a tax on our future,” he stressed.

Iqbal also emphasized that Pakistan’s economy and its flagship development projects — including the Uraan Pakistan initiative and the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) — depend heavily on international stability. “War halts progress. The world must stop enabling those who threaten peace,” he stated.

He called for an immediate ceasefire and voiced support for the International Atomic Energy Agency’s (IAEA) efforts to prevent attacks on nuclear sites. “We urge the UN Security Council to act — not hide behind the veto. Sovereignty and peace must be upheld as universal principles, not selective privileges,” Iqbal concluded.
