09 August 2023

Pakistani Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif announced his intention to submit a petition for the dissolution of the National Assembly, the country's lower house of parliament, to President Arif Alvi on Wednesday. The prime minister revealed this forthcoming action in an interview with Dawn News on Tuesday evening.

"Tomorrow [Wednesday], the president will be informed about the dissolution of the National Assembly. Afterward, I will reach out to opposition leader Raja Riaz and convene our first meeting," Sharif stated in the interview.

As per the TV channel's report, the early dissolution of the lower house of parliament will lead to the resignation of the current leadership of the Islamic republic. Subsequently, an interim government will be established to take the place of the outgoing cabinet. Nevertheless, the candidate for the position of interim prime minister has not yet been determined. Sharif mentioned that his party, Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz faction), is actively engaging in discussions with its ruling coalition partners regarding this matter.

The five-year term of the lower house of parliament is set to conclude on August 12. In accordance with Pakistan's constitution, general elections are conducted within 60 days after the standard dissolution of the lower house, and within 90 days in the event of an early dissolution.
