Pakistan's military holds Afghanistan responsible for surge in terrorism on its territory

18 July 2023

During the 258th Pakistan Army Corps Commanders' Conference, participants accused Afghanistan of being responsible for the increased terrorist activity on Pakistani soil. The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) of the Pakistan Defense Ministry reported this on Tuesday, as cited by the Dawn daily.

The ISPR stated that the presence of safe havens and the freedom of action enjoyed by the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and other similar outlawed groups in Afghanistan, along with the availability of advanced weaponry to extremists, are the main factors affecting Pakistan's security.

According to the Dawn, the inability of the Afghan Taliban (banned in Russia) to contain the TTP has been cited as the primary reason for the recent wave of unrest in Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa provinces.

Islamabad has repeatedly expressed concerns about the use of Afghan territory by extremists to carry out cross-border terrorism.
According to the Pakistan Institute of Conflict and Security Studies, there have been 151 terrorist attacks in Pakistan in the first half of 2023, marking an 18% increase compared to the same period in 2022. These attacks resulted in the death of 389 individuals and injured 656 between January and June 2023.
