Palestine Calls on International Community to Prevent Occupation of East Jerusalem

06 December 2023

The Palestinian Foreign Ministry has urged the international community, including the United States, to intervene urgently and prevent the execution of an Israeli government-approved plan to construct almost 1,800 settlement housing units in East Jerusalem.

"We are urgently calling for international and US intervention to halt the implementation of the colonial plan approved by the Israeli occupation government," declared the ministry in a statement quoted by the WAFA news agency. "The plan involves constructing 1,792 settlement housing units in occupied East Jerusalem," clarified the foreign ministry.

The ministry emphasized that Israel's settlement project is "an integral part of the occupier's plans to inundate Jerusalem with colonies and settlers, aiming to alter the existing historical, political, legal, and demographic reality."

"This plan aims to Judaize Jerusalem and completely detach it from the Palestinian surroundings, further isolating Jerusalem and the southern part of the occupied West Bank by annexing Palestinian land," - stated the foreign ministry. - "Such a scheme is designed to undermine Israel's ability to establish a Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital."

The steps taken underscore Israel's unilateral intent to determine the outcome of final settlement negotiations through the use of force and occupation, a move that, as emphasized by the ministry, will foreclose the opportunity to revive the peace process and address the conflict through political means.

"This could result in plunging the region into an enduring cycle of violence that proves challenging to control, posing significant threats to the security and stability of both the region and the wider world," summarized the foreign ministry.
